It is important to always call us to check open hours before coming to visit the farm. There are times when we must temporarily close the field during the harvest season due to weather or crop conditions. Call our recorded message at 613-338-2535 for up to date picking conditions before leaving home. Picking blueberries works best in dry conditions.

We recommend  that you check the local weather forecast before heading to the farm as dry conditions are best for berry picking

Local 5-day weather forecast for Bancroft.

Please note that we can only accept payment in the form of cash.

PICKING YOUR OWN BLUEBERRIES:

During blueberry harvest our pick-your-own field is open from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. daily, Monday through Saturday. We are always closed on Sundays.
Prices for the lowbush blueberries are $3.00 per pound for the pick-your-own fruit. There are 1½ lbs. of berries per quart. Bring your own containers if possible. Containers with handles are easiest to carry from the field.
We welcome well-behaved children who are supervised by their parents.
Please leave pets at home or in your ventilated vehicle.
We recommend that you wear long pants for sitting or kneeling beside the plants, as there can be rough plant debris in the blueberry pathways. Many pickers find that a cushion or low stool offers additional comfort. Hats and sunscreen are advised. Drinking water is available to purchase. Toilet facilities are provided.

PRE-PICKED BERRIES:

Pre-picked berries are $10.00 per quart or $39.00 for a four litre basket. It is best to phone ahead to place an order so that we can be sure to have sufficient berries ready for you when you come.

CARE OF BERRIES:

While Picking

Keep berries shaded if the day is warm and sunny to avoid sunscald of the berries. Choose berries that are completely blue as blueberries do not ripen after picking. To retain freshness refrigerate them as soon as possible.

Berries for fresh eating

Do not wash the berries until just before you are ready to use them. Fruit stays clean as we have a good layer of mulch over the entire planting. Berries will store successfully in shallow well ventilated containers in the refrigerator for well over a week.

Freezing berries

Blueberries retain much of their fresh flavour and consistency after freezing. Frozen berries keep for over a year without appreciable loss of quality. If you need to remove a few berries at a time from the freezer, package the blueberries dry without sugar. If you choose to wash the berries before freezing, freeze them on shallow trays, then package them. Remove as much air as possible from the packages. Excellent jam can be made from frozen berries. Just let the berries thaw, then crush the fruit and juice together before you measure.
